A Five Cruise Ship Day

Saturday November 25th 2023

Oh what a beautiful morning, Oh what a beautiful day. No I’m not in Oklahoma (and I can’t sing), but it was a very nice weather day. It was a sunny day with a gentle breeze that allowed the temperature to reach the mid seventies. Clouds moved in for sunset foreshadowing a wet day tomorrow.

I had a visit with some active dolphins in the Banana River today. I stopped at Kelly park on Merritt Island in search of colorful sailboarders in the water. The wind was probably wrong for the location, but I did find three dolphins that were feeding in the water around the boat basin. They hung around for ten or fifteen minutes poking their heads or fins up every minute or so. It was very hard to get pictures. I just couldn’t anticipate the where and when of their surfacing.

A couple of dolphin before they returned under the surface.

This was a five cruise ship in the port day. The day use and beach part of the park was very busy all day. It was warm enough that the beach got quite a bit of use along with all the opportunities for fishing along the channel into the port. Around 3:30PM more people started to arrive to watch the cruise ships depart. Cars and spectators lined the channel. Each ship sounded its horn as it passed to the delight of the spectators. The Disney Fantasy was the last ship to depart. It’s horn plays Disney tunes.

The Carnival Mardi Gras with the other cruise ships deeper in the harbor behind it.
Mardi Gras pushing out into the channel via thrusters to leave.
Carnival Freedom was second to leave.
Norwegian Escape is third
Royal Caribbean Mariner of the Sea was number four.
The middle three ships heading out to sea.
Disney Fantasy brought up the rear of the departures.

Between ships I switched my focus from man made ships to natures birds. The pelicans were busy feeding on the fish in the water and the foragers were busy on land. Many of the birds are not phased by all the people. I think other birds just stay away.

  1. Birds and boats! There are just two birds I need to look up in the guide. Thanks for all the pictures. The weather here has been a bit cooler and less humid, too – making us glad to be in Florida. All those pictures of cruise ships make me want to take a cruise.
